REDEFINING SPACE: LONDON BRIDGE ARCHES

This is the concept I developed for my final major project ‘Redefining Space’ during my degree.  This project is based in the railway arches located under London Bridge station and looks closely at the intimate relationship between fashion and architecture. The scheme consists of numerous fashion and screen-printing studios and work- spaces that are juxtaposed in a way that allow them to work together. The materials and structures in this project attempt to echo those typically used in the fashion industry. The subtle effect of using fabrics stitched into the existing structure and tension cables to form spaces, symbiotic structures, and other elements work beautifully with keeping the rough, raw, heavy qualities of the existing arches. Three times a year the main screen- printing area will be transformed into a temporary performance space for the garments and prints that are produced there to be exhibited. The element that is the screen-printing surface alters its function and is converted into a catwalk stage that launches itself down into the open lower ground level in an overt way from one of the suspended fashion studios. This allows the residue of the printing process to be evident on the stage. Overall this space aims to retain a creative vibe that influences an innovative and artistic atmosphere.

This project was published in the July ’09 edition of ‘IDfx magazine’, as part of an article based on interior architecture/ design graduates in the UK. This project was also exhibited in the London Free Range ’09, ‘Inside Edge’ exhibition and the University of Brighton ’09 Graduate exhibition.
